I am starting this day off right by showing the engagement photos of Claudia and Justin, we had sort of a vintage Chevy - Guess ad kind of feel in mind when shooting these and we just had too much fun. In fact we had so much fun taking these pictures together in the morning that at midnight we met up again and did some more midnight portraits with flash lights as our light source! Velangeline and Alain are just one of those couples that everyone just wants to be around. To be around them you witness real love and respect that people can have for one another. It sounds cheesy, but I mean it from the bottom of my heart. These two have known each other pretty much their whole lives and I'm pretty sure they were always meant to be.

If you follow me on facebook right now you would know that I am on a diet, of course I am sharing all the details of this with the world.. it my thing I've started doing... sharing everything. LOL

... I bet your asking now, what does your diet have to do with anything?

Well- all I wanted to say was check out the cake at the end of this post. Working on these photos has made my cake craving so much worse, thank you Velangeline and Alain. haha (not their fault for having such a yummy cake).

It's Halloween!!! Which got me thinking about skulls. I have an obsession with skulls and fashion, they go together like chocolate and strawberries.

As I dreamed about skulls and fashion I of course started thinking about Alexander McQueen and here is the thing. There is a clearly a market for Rock n' Roll brides, as proven by the popular rocknrollbride.com site based out of the U.K.

Amy and Chad were married early this year, and while I've posted several photos from their wedding here and there I noticed just the other day that I've never posted a full post about their wedding. SO, I will do that now.
Amy and Chad are a beautiful couple that met in Australia while Chad was touring this Country that so many Canadians dream of visiting. Amy, an Australian native met him while he was there and it was love at first site. The couple now live in Australia, but lucky for us Canadians they decided to have their wedding here. You know what this weekend is..... Halloween, which means time to dress up!! Which got me thinking about different times you can dress up, like in a boudoir shoot (I just happen to be shooting a boudoir shoot next weekend that I will share with you all). But for now I want to focus on fun outfits.
I see boudoir shoots all the time and what I love about them is it's a time where a woman can have a little fun and show off the curves God gave her. As a woman I find boudoir sessions totally empowering and I fully intend to have photos done of myself eventually (if you follow me on facebook you would know I'm currently training with a personal trainer right now and loving it!)
Back to the point... I've searched the internet and I have to say Victoria's Secret had the most fun sexy dress up outfits. I'd like to share with you now in the hopes on inspiring your next boudoir outfit. Please enjoy these photos and have a safe Halloween.

Fashion Dream - The Cape

I woke up this morning and said to my husband, "I dreamed all night about wearing a cape".
I meant this to be so inspiring a statement he'd say, "well then I think you should go on a shopping spree this weekend". Well, as you can imagine, this is not what happened.
Instead I got, "Like a super hero cape!?!?" followed by laughing at me.

No, I did not mean a super hero cape, I meant something elegant.
The one I pictured was tweed fabric with dark brown leather shoulders, perfect for a crisp fall day, especially if you paired it with long dark brown leather gloves. Do you ever have fashion dreams? I do, and I wake up all inspired to improve my look or schedule a photo shoot.

Anyways, this dream did get me thinking about capes. A cape is the perfect way to individualize your wedding style and add some texture which always looks great in a photo, check out these capes I found online.

Do you ever wonder if day dreaming has value?
You don't have to agree but I think day dreaming is invaluable.
As a creative person you come up with your best ideas and realizations when you take the time to clear your head (otherwise known as day dream). This can be at night, in the middle of the day, in the shower or wherever.

It's while day dreaming that I've come up with my photos like this one (that I love, not to toot my own horn).

I only write about this cause it's this time of year when as a photographer you start to think... what can I do to to spice up my photography services for next year? Well it's an exciting time needles to say and your imagination is what limits you (and all the shoe loving girls out there know I'm thinking something to do with shoes would be awesome). But that's all I'm going to say for now, you'll just have to wait to hear more.

The position is as per booking and often will be on weekends so availability to work on weekends is necessary.

You must be a people person with a great attitude; own your own DSLR and lenses (no brand is particular is needed, but Nikon gear would be an asset), and be able to keep smiling under pressure.

Of course we don't want this job to sound like a walk in the park, there are a lot of pressures and expectations that will be put on the chosen candidate.
You will be expected to:
-Work long hours when on a shoot

-Produce finished RAW files in a timely fashion

The couples who entered this contest all had the most lovely stories, I thank you all for sending them to me! When I read what Denise wrote about Doug I fell in love with them and knew I just had to meet this Darlings. Here is what Denise wrote to me about Doug:

My fiancee Doug Darling (seriously, Darling - I'm pretty sure most girls would get engaged for the name alone) proposed to me on Christmas Eve morning (2010) while we were in Toronto visiting his family for the holidays.

But before I get too far in to that, let me give a little bit of back story. Like many couples we met while in school. We were both attending the Creative Communications program at Red River College. We were paired together for a project and became instant friends. No one could make me laugh like he could, and no one else would understand my sense of humour. Even in friendship, it was easy to see his kindness, creativity, his genuine nature and his desire to help everyone around him.

We stayed best friends for four years, staying in touch as we began our careers and kept moving on through life. But eventually it became pretty clear that we weren't just best friends, we had fallen in love.

Fast forward three years to a sleepy eyed girl being woken up by her boyfriend in Toronto. He sat perched at the end of the bed, quietly coaxing me to wake up. I rubbed my eyes and tried to gain consciousness when he told me that he had an early Christmas present for me. "I wanted to know if you would marry me" he asked. He pulled out the largest pink and turquoise jeweled flower ring (a placeholder for one that we picked out later). I was still pretty confused, but when your best friend asks you that question, the answer isn't that hard to figure out. I immediately said yes.

We're planning on taking our time with putting together all the details of what I'm sure will be a super fun day, but one thing is for sure - I can't WAIT to spend the rest of my life with this incredible person. It really is awesome. My best friend's wedding also turns out to be my own!

Today the wedding photos I recently took of Amy and Chad are up and being featured on the Madeline's Weddings Blog. Madeline's is an event planner and decorator in Winnipeg, they didn't decorate Amy and Chad's wedding but she still features local weddings that have great ideas to inspire on her blog.
Amy and Chad married this summer. The pair, now living in Australia flew a long way to have their perfect wedding among family and friends in Winnipeg (where Chad is from). I was honoured to be asked to be a part of such a special time, made more special by the fact that not only was this a celebration of love but a heart felt good bye from understanding and loving family and friends. I myself have 2 sisters living away from here and I personally know how hard it is to be happy for the people you love when it means you will see them less. I was touched by the support both families showed for this couple who have up-rooted their lives for one another. My heart is forever changed for having met them and witnessed the support from their families.

Just wanted to share with everyone something a little different today.
Some of you may or may not know, but I was recently a bride myself!!!!
So, when you email and I email you back "Congratulations!" I mean it from the bottom of my heart cause I know first hand how exciting is to get married to the love of you life, get to plan a wedding full of personalized details, and then have your photos shown and be an inspiration to other brides.

Congratulations to all the brides out there reading this.
When Tony and I got married we decided to make the theme of our wedding us! Who are we, we are an Italian-Hungarian couple who love our families, we love all things stylish and vintage, we love warm colours, we love good food, wine, great music, all the little luxuries in life really, and we are both people who are very confident and fun loving, and now we are people who have each other.

To put this all into one succinct theme that we could work with we decided to make our wedding kind of vineyard themed, bringing together both of our cultures and our families.

We did tons of research on Italian and Hungarian wedding traditions and tried to fit them in where we could in our own little ways.

We had our wedding at the Caboto Center on Wilkes were they let us choice or own wine (since a vineyard themed wedding better have great wine!) we got all our wine from Calabria.

In the end everyone had such a great time at our wedding, people are still talking about it and it was in September! I have to admit it was a crazy fun wedding.
We had The Danny Kramer band play live music and the ambiance was complete with our personalized touches and the help of Madeline's Weddings and Events there to decorate and plan the day for us.

Today our wedding is being featured on Weddings in Winnipeg.

Music that speaks to the soul

I know that music really doesn't have much to do with my photos, or my blog, or my company really, but music... this kind of music does have to do with the vision on LVB because the vision is to photograph the feelings in you and around you.
This song is SO beauitiful, I had to share it. This song speaks to my soul the way that I want the photos I take of you and your family to speak to your soul.
So, in that way it does relate to what I do on this blog. It demonstrates musically the way I wish to speak to you. Elegantly, understated, to the soul, to the part inside of you that makes you feel like you are You.
Cheesy, but that is how I feel, and when I was a bride, speaking from experience here, that is what I realized I wanted from my photographer.

You know there are days when a girl wakes up with an extra skip in her step. For me, that kind of day is today.
It doesn't have to be for any particular reason, but on those days I sure do appreciate the beauty in everything.
Because of this extra skip I decided to share some photos of shoes that I love, cause I know other girls are out there that loves shoes as much as I do, and those girls are going to really appreciate this post.
Those girls, if they're like me, will love a movie because the main actress has awesome outfits, even if the story line is only ok. haha, love that about myself and other stylish girls of the world. We Rock!

At Last, Angel and Sean's Spring Feature Wedding!

We are so proud every time one of our couples get featured in a magazine.
In the March issue of Weddings in Winnipeg there is a whopping 5 page spread about Angel and Sean's wedding at Breezy Bend. This couple had a beautiful wedding with different Purple and green flowers everywhere, bouquets and boutonnieres from Timeless Florals. Table arrangements by Breezy Bend Country Club. The theme was spring, spring spring! The perfect theme to feature right now since spring is just around the corner.

The future Mr. and Mrs. Doug and Denise Darling! (LOVE that last name!)

Doug and Denise have won an engagement photo session and I can not wait to meet the Darlings!

Here is the story that Denise sent to me about her and Doug, their friendship that turned into love, and how he proposed to her:

My fiancee Doug Darling (seriously, Darling - I'm pretty sure most girls would get engaged for the name alone) proposed to me on Christmas Eve morning (2010) while we were in Toronto visiting his family for the holidays.

Before I get too far into that, let me give you a little bit of back story. Like many couples we met while in school. We were both attending the Creative Communications program at Red River College. We were paired together for a project and became instant friends. No one could make me laugh like he could, and no one else could understand my sense of humour. Even in friendship, it was easy to see his kindness, creativity, his genuine nature and his desire to help everyone around him.

We stayed best friends for four years, staying in touch as we began our careers and kept moving on through life. But, eventually it became pretty clear that we weren't just best friends, we had fallen in love.

Congratulations to the beautiful and happy couple, and Happy Valentine's Day to all the couples in Love out there. Today is really a day to celebrate and appreciate that wonderful person that you have to share your life with. I believe the best relationships are the ones where you feel like you truly are with your best friend, and that is why I love my husband, and it is also why I chose Doug and Denise to be my lucky couple. Congratulations again.

I started taking a new course last night. A business course for people in artistic disciplines. We were asked to do a show and tell, I stupidly agreed to go first next week. I left thinking about the images I would show and what I would say about them. I also found myself thinking about the artists that have inspired me, why I became a wedding photographer, and what it is about being a wedding photographer that I love so much.

I'll start first with the artists I look up to.
Frida Kahlo.
Mexican painter extraordinaire. I can't remember when I first started looking at her work. I remember being in my fifth grade art class and telling the other kids about her work, which may seem odd, but I don't remember when I first discovered it. I just loved it. I am drawn to the expression of emotion, her pain, her self discovery. Out of her 143 paintings, 55 of them were self-portraits.
Through the continuous exploration of her feelings and life around her, we are able to look at her work and know quite a bit about the events in her life and even get a sense of her feelings at the time. That is a lot to tell through an image. Her work is about her emotions, her pain, her culture, her life. I studied all types of art, I always longed to be able to express even a shred of the amount of emotion that Frida was able to express in her work.

My favorite work by Sally Mann are the images of her own family and children.
I find that both Frida Kahlo and Sally Mann are able to express emotion and human relation so beautifully.
Sally Mann said "photographs open doors into the past but they also allow a look into the future."

It is funny, what a lot of people don't realize is that becoming an artist was not a choice for me. I never decided to be an artist, it was something that I was born knowing I was going to be. If I had a choice I may have chosen to be a dentist, make some more money and not work every night and weekend. LOL
I took art classes very seriously even when I was five years old, I honestly always knew I was going to be an artist.
What I didn't know was how my art would develop and how I would eventually use it to enrich the lives of others.

When I was getting my degree in Fine arts a friend asked me to photograph her wedding, what an honour, but I was terrified. Up until then my art, like Frida Kahlo's had been all about self discovery and was mostly self portraits.
I photographed her wedding, and guess what, I loved it.
I photographed a few more weddings and got better and better at it every time. There was one year when almost every bride I had started crying when they saw the images after their wedding. They told me that they had already forgotten just how happy they were on that day and that the photographs I took reminded them of those feelings. I knew then that I was going dedicate my art practice to weddings and couples in love. I love that I can use my art to bring tears to peoples' eyes, to make them happy; to give their future family a door to the past and the future. What a lovely way to use ones artistic skills. In that way I feel I am using what Sally Mann and Frida Kahlo have shown me so beautifully, how to use art to discover the emotion and beauty in human relations.

This image I found on an old hard drive this morning. I took it on film, at the time of shooting it I didn't appreciate it like I did today, it wasn't even one of the images I gave to the client. Something about it reminds me of a Sally Mann image, I appreciate this image today for it's emotion, and for it's relevance to me as an image I took on the way to becoming the artist I am today. For me it is a door to my past and my future as an artist.

In the end, I am a wedding photographer because I love photographing weddings, and because I couldn't do anything else, even if I wanted to.

My goal is to become an International wedding photographer, not just a Winnipeg wedding photographer, to keep growing as an artist all the time, and to keep bringing tears to the eyes of my clients.

Super Hero Cuff Links!

It is customary to get the members of your wedding party a gift, a little thank you for being by my side on this important day and for being a part of my life.

Why not get them something they can also wear on the day of the wedding?

At a wedding I photographed recently the groom got all of his groomsmen marvel comic book cuff links. Each groosmen got the links with his favorite Marvel character on it. How cool?!

The guys were so excited!

It was like being with a bunch of kids. Don't worry boys, I mean that in a good way. I say a wedding day and wedding present should be FUN!

A word of caution to all the ladies out there, These cuff links do have the side effect of making men pretend that they are the super heroes themselves.

Well today in Winnipeg it is a chilly -36 degrees (not including the wind chill, with the wind chill I believe it is about -42 degrees).
Long story short, it's really cold. On a day like today I like to think of a few of my favorite things.

1. Addams Family Values. This movie will always be the funniest movie ever to me.
2. Old movie posters. I just love the graphic design!
3. The original Barbie, such style!
4. Chandeliers. Nothing can add more sparkle to a room.
5. The Barcelona Chair. The most perfectly designed piece of furniture, it adds class to every room it's in, and will never look dated.
6. Shabby Chic interior design. For me I love the light colours, the soft fabrics, the comfort and the luxury of the room all mixed in one that is still a unified look. It is what my home is aspiring to be. I also love how these rooms look lived in, but not messy.
7. Grace Kelly. Enough said.
8. A bunch of Baby's breath will always be the most beautiful floral arrangement to me.
9. Sushi = yummy
10. Old wedding photographs, and hand tinted photographs.

Then my favorite thing is to take all these favorite things and let them influence and inspire me, then I create my own art through the means of wedding photography. Here are some of my favorite images by LVB photography.

Shoes Are A Girl's Best Friend

I do believe that when Marylin Monroe famously sang "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" she meant to say "shoes are a girls best friend". Diamonds are a close second though, so you're not far off Marylin.

Loving shoes has long been a part of culture and history. Think about Marie Antoinette, can you picture her shoes? Sure you can, everyone can, it was a part of culture and the time to have embellished pieces of art adorning your feet. Today is no different.

Interesting fact, over 92% of women can remember the first pair of shoes they bought with their own money, but more than one in three women of that 92% can not recall their first kiss!*
Does this mean shoes are more important to us then our man? Of course not! Not when you are talking about the man you are going to marry. But, it does mean that shoes are something to be loved and it means that when a girl is planning her wedding to that man, the shoes she decides to wear have to be extra extra special.

When I started looking for more information about shoes I found an interesting line of shoes that I could not in good consciousnesses not share on my blog.
The line of shoes is Pour La Victoire. Any of their shoes are beautiful, but their bridal collection is really special. Here are some photos of the bridal collection, you will notice that they are first beautiful, and second that they all have a blue leather sole. The detail of the sole is so..... ahhhh... beautiful really, first it's a way of mixing the tradition of something blue into your outfit, and the colour of blue chosen is as classy as a Tiffany's box. The Sun is Shinning

The Sun is shinning today.

At the risk of sounding like a member of the Brady bunch I just want to say today that the sun is shinning and I couldn't be happier or more optimistic.

Last week kind of sucked. I ended everyday saying... ah poop, breath and try again tomorrow.

It was a string of bad luck, I had the flu, I had to deal with a small case of identity theft (which was caught fast by the officials, and reported, thank God), and then I was hit in a car accident, among other things.

Over the weekend I met up with a great friend, ate some fantastic food, shot some fantastic photos (which I will share with you soon) and all and all I am feeling great, much better.

I am hoping that the Gods are smiling on me and have decided to give me all the bad luck I'm going to have year early, now I am ready for the good things that are to come and I am appreciating the sun shinning down on me... except I'm at a desk and not outside, but you know what I mean.

Sara and Cole's engagement story...

Sara and Cole’s proposal story

It’s a funny thing, considering marriage for the first (and hopefully only) time in your life. For all it’s excitement, for all the butterflies it stirs up in yr stomach, well — frankly, it’s terrifying!

Sara and I had discussed the idea of marriage for some time before I asked her to marry me. She had raised the idea first, about 6 months or so into our relationship — a short time by many standards, I’m sure, but then we also dove into our relationship head-first from the outset. But it wasn’t until the 30th of March, 2010, that I finally presented her with the question and the ring that made our engagement official.

It’s interesting for me to note that Sara is not at all the person I saw myself getting married to when I pondered the idea as a bachelor. I saw myself marrying someone more, well, like me: bookish, a home-body, interested in obscure music and art, someone in the middle of planning a career. Sara, on the other hand, doesn’t read much, likes going out, listens almost exclusively to mainstream pop music, and has only just begun considering the idea of a career (she is, after all, six years my junior — something else I never saw coming). And yet, these differences between us fall away when we’re together; they just don’t matter. We support each other whole-heartedly — I’ve rarely met someone who is as enthusiastic and supportive of my endeavours as Sara is. We help each other to learn about the other, we teach each other new things, we tell the other when they’re being stupid. We respect each other’s differences in taste (in music, cuisine, entertainment) and even grow to appreciate some of them mutually. We don’t love each other despite our differences — we love each other because of our differences.

Sara and I have shared a lot of amazing experiences, though some of them are amazing in a very humble way. Many of these experiences were running through my head as I contemplated asking Sara for her hand in marriage, and it was these experiences that ended up forming my proposal to her. For a couple weeks beforehand, I began pulling together photographs of our time together, from the first week we met to present. I strung them together into a video, arranged chronologically, interspersed the imagery with a narrative text about our special moments, and set it all to a song that reminded me of her. At the close of the video, the last bit of text told Sara how much I’d enjoyed our time together, but how I wanted today to be the best day yet — so, accordingly, she should turn around and tell me, “Yes.” And as she did, there I was, down on one knee, nervously holding up a ring and a smile.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared to ask someone a question in my entire life. But a few dead-silent seconds after I asked her to marry me, she squeaked out a rather shocked “Yes!”

It’s an exciting time for us. Sara is now in school, training to become a hairstylist, I’m making progress towards a career I’m actually excited about, and we’re moving into a beautiful condo next month — our first place that will actually be “ours” from the outset (although, we’re only renting — hopefully, a house will come next). We’re roughly thinking about a wedding date in summer of 2012, but we’re allowing the date to remain undecided until our lives are a little more in order.

Sara might not be the person I always imagined marrying, but I’m so glad she isn’t; she’s something far better than I could’ve asked for.

I was just thinking today how excited I am to photograph all the wonderful couples that booked me for their upcoming weddings in 2011 & 2012. You are all so lovely and I can not wait for your weddings!!

As many of you know I was also married this fall. This is a photo of my sisters and I on my wedding day, taken by the lovely Carmin Davidson (a frequent second photographer with LVB photography, and a great friend of mine).

This is the story, if any of you were wondering about the tattoos on our necks that together spell LOVE.

When I was born, it was at the time that everyone was in love with princess Diana, and my Mom was no exception. She was nuts about her, they were even pregnant at the same time. My Mom wanted to name me Diana. My Dad hated the name, he just hated it, he suggest Liana, but my Mom didn't like that name either, she suggested Diane. They could only agree on Liane, which is why my name is spelled like Diane, but with an L.

After me Olivia was born, she was named after the cute little girl named Olivia on either the Cosby show or Sesame Street (I can't remember).

By the time my Mom was pregnant for the third time she thought, I am for sure going to have 4 kids, why not do something cool and make the first letter of all their names spell "LOVE". The next kid was going to have to have a name that started with a "V" whether it was a boy or a girl.

It ended up being another girl, named Vanessa.

By the time she was pregnant with her fourth child I remember being part of the name choosing process, we all thought it was going to be a boy, so Eric was chosen as the name. It was another girl! And she is Erika.

What I always liked best about this was that we would tell this story to people once and it helped them remember our names and who was oldest-youngest in our family. Now that I am older, I just think it's pretty cool.

We got the tattoos together when we were old enough to get tattoos, and now we can take this cool "LOVE" photo at every one of our weddings.

That's the story of why name is spelled differently from every other Liane, and why I have an "L" tattooed on the back of my neck. Pretty Cool... LOVE you girls!
